What Length Hair Extensions Should I Get?

Updated 2026-10-02. By Devan, hair extension specialist.

Measure from your natural hairline, over the top of your head and down to where you want the hair to end. As a guide, 16 inches reaches around the shoulders, 18 inches just past, 20 inches the chest, 22 inches below the chest and 24 inches the waist. Your own height and natural hair length matter more than the number, and extensions always look longer when your own hair is shorter.

How do I measure the right length?

Place a soft tape at your front hairline, run it over the top of your head and down your back to the point where you want the ends to sit. That measurement is the length to order. Do it in front of a mirror or ask someone to read it.

The added hair blends into your own ends, so the visible length can sit a little above the number. If you want a clearly longer look, size up one length.

How do the common lengths look?

16 inch: around the shoulder, a natural first step for shorter hair.

18 inch: just past the shoulder, easy to blend and style.

20 inch: chest length, our most popular.

  • 22 inch: below the chest, a longer look that still blends
  • 24 inch: waist length for a dramatic change
  • Add 2 inches for very thick hair so the ends blend

Does length change the price and weight?

Yes. Longer hair costs more because it takes more raw hair to make, and longer packs carry more weight at the same piece count. If you are choosing between a longer length and more volume, decide which matters more first, then pick the method.

What about my natural hair length?

Your own length sets the blend point. If your hair is short, a very long set can look disconnected unless it is layered. If you are growing your hair out, a length close to your natural ends blends most easily.

Questions

What is the most popular extension length?

20 inch is our most requested length because it reaches the chest and blends well for most heights. 18 and 22 inch are close behind.

Should I size up for thick hair?

Often yes. Very thick hair can hide the ends of added hair, so going one length longer helps the blend. A consultation confirms it.

Can I cut extensions to length?

Clip-ins and tape-ins can be trimmed by a stylist to blend with your layers. Cut them only after fitting so the shape matches your own hair.
